Democracy needs creativity, but American society seems bent on discouraging children from ever learning how to be creative. Kids need “time, space, and silence” to develop creativity, but are getting so overstimilated that they never experience the boredom that would force them to exercise their imaginations, or are stuck with licensed toys whose stories can’t be infinitely rewritten by the child who already knows who or what they are. We must actively try create space for children to learn creativity by removing these distractions.
