Recently, Volvo trucks released a brilliant marketing commercial by featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as their spokesman and the response was astonishing, with over 62 million views on Youtube. The question posed was, “what if Volvo used some unknown ‘Joe-Smoe’ instead of an A-List celeb?” They probably would not have the amazing result they have produced by hiring Jean-Claude, even if his name has not been seen on the big screen recently. He is an iconic actor and well known for his bad boy antics on and off the screen. Imagine the possibilities that companies could achieve by simply using a spokesperson who is well known in the Hollywood world. Picture this: JCPenny using Alicia Silverstone’s character from Clueless to sell a clothing line, or Suave hair products using Weird Al as a comic relief for a curling hair spray! The possibilities are endless and the marketing companies are beginning to catch on. Even if Jean-Claude did not sell 62 million people a new Volvo truck, their name is still being shouted all throughout the virtual world and this is the whole point of advertising, having the world know your name. If more and more commercials can create such an uproar to their consumers, then their advertising campaign will not have been in vain.
